How to use with ChatGPT

Connect ChatGPT to your Awaken account by adding a custom connector and signing in with OAuth.

Before you begin

Awaken API access requires a Dolphin or Whale plan.

ChatGPT connects through OAuth: you sign in to Awaken from the connector flow and no API key is copied anywhere. Adding a custom connector requires Developer mode, which is available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts on the web app. On Business and Enterprise workspaces an admin must enable it first.

Turn on Developer mode

1. Open connector settings

In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Apps & Connectors, then Advanced settings.

2. Enable Developer mode

Toggle on Developer mode. If the toggle is missing on a Business or Enterprise workspace, a workspace admin must enable it under Workspace Settings → Permissions & Roles.

Create the Awaken connector

Where the connection lives

The grant appears under Connected Apps in Awaken settings, where you can review or revoke it at any time.

1. Create a connector

Back on Apps & Connectors, choose Create. Name it Awaken and enter the MCP server URL https://mcp.awaken.tax/mcp.

2. Sign in to Awaken

ChatGPT opens Awaken's authorization page. Sign in with the account that has access to the workspace you want to connect.

3. Choose a client and scope

The consent page shows chatgpt.com as the requesting app. Pick the Awaken client ChatGPT may access and allow read only or read + write, then approve. ChatGPT receives a token scoped to that client and refreshes it automatically.

Verify the connection

After the tool scan finishes, start a new ChatGPT conversation and ask it to use Awaken. If it can list your accounts or transactions, the connection is working.

Review

Show my largest taxable events this year and flag anything missing cost basis.

Clean up

Find my unreviewed transactions, explain the likely labels, and ask before changing anything.

Reports

Generate my Form 8949 report for 2025 and tell me when it is ready.

How the OAuth path works

ChatGPT identifies itself with a client metadata document hosted at chatgpt.com, which Awaken allowlists the same way it does Claude and Grok, so no API key is exchanged during connection.
